Fringe World Festival 2012

26 January - 19 February

The Metcalfe Playhouse, as part of the Empyrean Function Centre, is named after Edgar Metcalfe. Edgar Metcalfe was born in 1933 in the United Kingdom. He is renowned for his work as an actor, director and playwright. Metcalfe is recognised in Perth for his contribution in theatre, but also starred in films and television.

Upon finishing high school, Metcalfe took up acting in troupes in the UK for 12 years in which he was able to develop his talents, before he was offered the position of Artistic Director of the Playhouse Theatre in Perth at age 29. He stayed at the Playhouse Theatre for four years, before returning home to England.

Over the next 40 years he moved between England, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth as a director and an actor, consolidating his career within the theatre, by directing four national tours in Australia.

In 2011, the former IMAX cinema was converted into a theatre venue named after the theatre veteran and the defunct Playhouse Theatre, The Metcalfe Playhouse.

Eventually, Metcalfe made the decision to return to his hometown of Blackpool to retire. However, he returned a year later and settled back into the city where he always did his best work.

Empyrean is proud to honour Edgar Metcalfe and his devotion and contributions to theatre in Perth with the Metcalfe Playhouse.
